Ayia Napa and Protaras, Beyond the Party Reputation

Compare hotels in Ayia Napa. Book an airport transfer.

Is Ayia Napa just a party town? No. The nightlife fits roughly four streets in August, and the rest of the area has the best beaches in Cyprus and some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean.

Protaras, fifteen minutes away, is a separate proposition aimed at families and couples, and outside June to September the whole coast goes quiet.

Ayia Napa and Protaras at a Glance

  • Best for: Beaches, snorkelling and clear water.
  • Best part: Fig Tree Bay and the Cape Greco coastal walk.
  • Weakest part: The central party streets in July and August.
  • Best months: June, September and the quiet shoulder seasons.
  • Getting there: About 40 to 45 minutes from Larnaca Airport. The official taxi tariff to Nissi is €42.26 by day or €49.58 at night (53.2 km).

How Do You Get to Ayia Napa and Protaras?

Larnaca airport is around 40 to 45 minutes from Ayia Napa and about 50 minutes from Protaras. The official regulated taxi tariff from the airport to Ayia Napa Nissi, 53.2 km away, is 42.26 euro by day and 49.58 euro at night. Protaras is not on the tariff, so agree the price before you set off. A private transfer with GetTransfer fixes the price in advance. The two towns are fifteen minutes apart, and a hire car from DiscoverCars makes the quieter coves easy. Taxis work for short hops, and our guide to getting around Cyprus covers the buses.

Which Beaches Are the Best?

This corner of the island genuinely has the best coast in Cyprus, and it is not close. This year we have swum at Ayia Napa, Protaras, Fig Tree Bay and Turtle Bay.

  • Fig Tree Bay: In Protaras, consistently rated among the best beaches in Europe. Soft sand, a long shallow shelf and a small islet offshore you can swim to. The strongest family choice on the island.
  • Nissi Beach: The famous one, with white sand and a sandbar out to a small island. Lively in season and a completely different place out of it.
  • Konnos Bay: Between the two towns in a sheltered cove with green hillside around it, and the best snorkelling in the area.
  • Makronissos: A series of small coves with the same water as Nissi and a fraction of the noise.

Our guide to the best beaches in Cyprus covers all of them.

Is Cape Greco Worth Visiting?

Yes. It is the headland between the two towns and the best walking on this coast, with low limestone cliffs, sea caves cut into the rock, a natural stone bridge and water in a colour that looks edited.

A network of easy trails means you can walk for half an hour or half a day, and it is genuinely good with children. Sunrise here is the best on the island. A car makes it easy to reach the quieter coves.

What About the Party Reputation?

Ayia Napa’s nightlife is real and it is concentrated. The central square and the surrounding streets run late through July and August, and if that is what you came for it delivers.

What matters is how small that area is. Book two streets back and it barely registers, and Protaras is an entirely separate proposition. Outside June to September the whole thing quietens down almost completely.

Where Should You Stay in Ayia Napa or Protaras?

Stay in Protaras for families and quiet, in Ayia Napa for nightlife and walking distance to Nissi, and two streets back from the centre if you want the town without the noise. We have reviewed one hotel in the area so far, Adams Beach on Nissi Bay. Our guide to where to stay in Cyprus compares the area with the rest of the island, and we will add more Ayia Napa and Protaras hotel reviews as we publish them.

What Is It Like Out of Season?

This is the part worth knowing. From October to May the area transforms, with empty beaches, a sea that stays swimmable into November and prices that drop sharply.

Cape Greco is at its best in spring when the wildflowers are out. Some businesses close over winter, so check before booking in January or February.

What Is There Beyond the Coast?

Ayia Napa Monastery sits in the middle of the town, a sixteenth century Venetian building surrounded by bars, which is a contrast worth seeing. The sculpture park along the coast road is better than it sounds.

Inland, the village of Paralimni gives you a sense of what the area was before tourism, which was mostly potato farming.

Where Should You Eat in Ayia Napa and Protaras?

The tourist strips are what you would expect, and better food sits inland in the villages and along the quieter parts of the coast. The harbour at Ayia Napa is the exception, where the fish is genuinely local. We have not yet reviewed an Ayia Napa or Protaras restaurant, and we will add them to the ranking when we do.

Our guides to the best fish taverns in Cyprus and the best restaurants in Cyprus cover the wider island.

Who Is It For, and Who Should Look Elsewhere?

Families, beach lovers, snorkellers and anyone who wants warm clear water will be very happy here. Couples will like Protaras and the shoulder seasons most.

If you want mountains, villages and old towns, base yourself elsewhere and visit for a day. Light sleepers should avoid the central streets of Ayia Napa in peak summer.

Final Thoughts

The reputation does this corner of Cyprus a disservice. The water quality is the best on the island, Cape Greco is one of the finest coastal walks anywhere in the country, and the difference between the party streets and everywhere else is about a ten minute walk.
