When is the best time to visit Cyprus? September and October for warm sea and comfortable heat, with April and May close behind. Cyprus has over 300 sunny days a year, mild winters and long dry summers, which makes it one of the most reliable climates in Europe.

That reliability is the island’s main practical advantage, and it still pays to know what each month actually does.

Cyprus Weather at a Glance

  • Best months overall: September and October.
  • Best for walking: April and May.
  • Best for swimming: June to October, with the warmest sea in August and September.
  • Hottest: July and August, with inland Nicosia often above 40 degrees.
  • Wettest: December to February.

What Is the Best Month to Visit Cyprus?

September and October are the best months overall. April and May are close behind. July and August are hot and busy but perfectly workable if you plan around the middle of the day. Winter is mild, green, very quiet and wetter than people expect.

What Is the Weather Like Month by Month?

These are climate averages for Limassol on the south coast, so treat them as a guide rather than a forecast. As of 2026 they give a clear picture of how fast the sea and the air change through the year.

  • December to February: daytime highs of about 14 to 16 degrees, nights of 6 to 8, a sea of roughly 16 to 19 degrees and about five to six hours of sunshine a day. December is the wettest month, with around 102mm of rain over 12 days.
  • March: high teens in the daytime, with the sea still around 16 to 17 degrees.
  • April: highs of about 21 degrees and a sea of about 17, which is too cold for most swimmers.
  • May: daytime temperatures in the mid twenties, with the sea warming to swimmable by the end of the month.
  • June to August: highs of 29 to 32 degrees, nights of 18 to 20, a sea of 23 to 27 and 11 to 12 hours of sunshine. Rain is rare, at no more than a day a month.
  • September: still properly hot, with the sea at its warmest.
  • October: highs of about 26 degrees and a sea of about 25.
  • November: the sea holds above 22 degrees through the month, and the first rains usually arrive.

Nicosia is hotter than the coast in summer and colder at night in winter, and the Troodos run several degrees cooler all year. In July and August the average daily temperature is about 30 degrees on the central plain and about 24 in the Troodos.

What Is Cyprus Like in Spring?

Green, colourful and comfortable, from March to May. The island is at its greenest and the wildflowers are out, which is a side of Cyprus most summer visitors never see. March sits in the high teens, warming through April into the mid twenties by May.

This is the best window for anything outdoors. Walking is comfortable all day, the Troodos are accessible once the snow clears, and the coast is quiet. The sea is still cold in March and April, warming to swimmable by late May. Our guide to hiking in Cyprus covers where to go while conditions are this good.

How Hot Is Cyprus in Summer?

Hot, but workable, from June to August. June is the pick of the three: warm rather than punishing, the sea up to temperature, the peak crowds not yet arrived. July and August bring coastal temperatures around 30 to 33 degrees, with inland Nicosia regularly above 40. Humidity is low, which helps, and the sun is strong enough that the middle of the day needs respecting. Rain is essentially absent.

This is when altitude matters. Our guide to the coolest places in Cyprus covers where to go. In peak summer, book an air conditioned hire car early on DiscoverCars, since the cheapest options go first.

How Strong Is the Sun in Cyprus?

Stronger than most northern European visitors expect. Climate data for the south coast rate the UV index as extreme in June and July, so sun cream, a hat and shade at midday are not optional, even on a day that feels breezy.

Summer also changes the working day. From 15 June to 31 August an optional afternoon break runs from 14:00 to 17:00, so some businesses close through the hottest hours. The main state run archaeological sites stay open later in summer, until 19:30 from 16 April to 15 September, compared with 17:00 the rest of the year, which makes a late afternoon visit realistic.

Why Is Autumn the Best Season?

Because the sea is at its warmest and the heat has eased, from September to November. September is still properly hot and the crowds thin from mid month. October settles into the mid twenties, which is close to ideal.

The sea reaches around 26 to 27 degrees after a full summer of heating, and stays swimmable into November. Prices fall once the school holidays end. The first rains usually arrive late October and green the island up again. September also brings the grape harvest in the wine villages, covered in our guide to Cyprus wine.

Is Cyprus Worth Visiting in Winter?

Yes, if you want quiet and do not mind some rain. Winter runs from December to February and is mild by European standards, with coastal daytime temperatures typically in the mid teens. It is also the wet season, and Cyprus gets most of its annual rainfall in these months, usually in short heavy bursts rather than persistent drizzle.

Snow falls in the Troodos in January and February, and there is a small ski area on Mount Olympus. The contrast is real: you can be on a beach in the morning and in snow by the afternoon. It is very quiet, very green and considerably cheaper. Our guide to Cyprus in winter covers the season in full.

When Is the Sea Warm Enough to Swim?

From late May through to early November, which is a longer season than almost anywhere else in Europe. It is worth its own mention because it is the island’s real edge. August and September are the warmest, and plenty of locals swim year round, though December to March is bracing.

The open sea stays above 22 degrees from June to November and peaks at around 27 in August. From January to March it averages only about 16 to 17, which explains why a winter swim is a test of nerve rather than a holiday pleasure.

What Are the Most Common Weather Mistakes?

  • Booking a beach week in March or April: and expecting warm water, when the sea is still around 17 degrees.
  • Skipping layers: evenings in winter and the whole of the Troodos are much cooler than the coast.
  • Walking at midday in summer: start at dawn or choose a shaded trail at altitude.
  • Assuming Nicosia feels like the coast: it is hotter in summer and colder on winter nights.
  • Expecting resort towns to be open in winter: much of Ayia Napa and Protaras shuts between November and March.
  • Underestimating the sun: the UV index is extreme in early summer.

Where Should You Stay and Eat by Season?

Prices swing with the season, so check your exact dates before you commit.

  • Summer: stay on the coast with a pool and sea access. Limassol is 45 to 60 minutes from Larnaca Airport and has the widest choice. Ayia Napa, 40 to 45 minutes from Larnaca Airport, suits families.
  • Spring and autumn: Paphos is 15 to 20 minutes from Paphos Airport and ideal for walking and archaeology.
  • Winter: Nicosia and Limassol both work, because there is plenty to do indoors, and thermal springs and hammams suit a wet day.

For the wider picture, see where to stay in Cyprus. If you would rather not drive from the airport, book a private transfer in advance.

Who Should Visit When?

Swimmers and beach lovers should aim for June or September to October. Walkers and photographers should go in April or May, when the island is green. If you want it quiet and cheap, winter is the answer, as long as you accept some rain.

Anyone with children out of school will be travelling in July or August. If that is you, base yourself near the sea and use the mountains as your escape hatch.

Final Thoughts

The climate is the reason Cyprus works as a year round destination rather than a summer one. The season for swimming runs six months, the season for walking runs nine, and the mountains give you an escape hatch when the coast gets difficult. Pick your month to match what you want from the trip and the weather will very rarely let you down.
